Story

Cambridge Wind Band are enthusiastically launching another fundraising event to support a wonderful charity, Deafblind UK. We have fundraised for them during our musical performances, and now stepping it up by running the Cambridge Half Marathon to raise as much as we can for this hands-on charity. Cambridge Wind Band was formed in 2012 by its current leader and conductor, Viv Halton, with a vision to support worthy causes and charities. Viv and her son, Mikey, are running this half-marathon, as people struggling with vision and/or hearing loss are close to their heart, as Viv’s great-grandparents were profoundly deaf. A further runner, Eldre Beukes, lead clarinetist for Cambridge Wind Band, works as an audiologist and sees first-hand how debilitating hearing impairments are as it hampers communication and social interaction and leads to a greater risk of dementia.

There are currently 8 million people over 60 living with hearing loss and 1.5m people who are blind in the UK. Their hearing and/or visual loss lowers their independence and quality of life. These problems are compounded for those living with both vision and hearing loss and they face many challenges, are at risk of serious injury from falling, and often do not get the help and support needed. Deafblind UK has the vision of helping these people live life to the full. This is done by empowering over 3,500 members by delivering person-centered care, support for daily living, practical information on technology that can help, training such as employment programs, and specialised equipment. Supported accommodation is provided as well as practical help with things like shopping. They enable research and support programs to improve outcomes for children with multiple sensory difficulties.

We will really appreciate your support for Deafblind UK and help improve outcomes for these people by sponsoring us and enabling us to raise as much as we can for this worthy cause.
