Lizzie and Ellie’s March Marathon · 31 March 2021

Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. Our Helpline is available online or by phone for anyone suffering, as well as their family and friends.

Story

Lizzie and I started running together during the second lockdown in November 2020, as a means of staying sane and boosting our mood. With some Strava miles behind us, we completed our first half-marathon together in December 2020. Now, for the third lockdown instalment, we have decided to run two half-marathons in a month, but this time with the added bonus of raising money for causes that we believe in. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate amongst all psychiatric disorders, and it is thanks to BEAT's amazing resources that I am able to celebrate being fully recovered from mine. Recent lockdowns have increased people's anxiety around food, exercise, and weight gain, meaning that an increasing number of people have been struggling with body imagine and disordered eating. BEAT is an incredible charity that offers free support and counselling services to people struggling with eating disorders, as well as their families and loved ones. They need additional fundraising support now more than ever.
