I have been lucky enough to be selected to take part in a  service project in Haiti with 11 others from the London and South East Region of Girlguiding.

We chose Haiti as we wanted to visit a country that team participants feel they would not otherwise go to. It will be a fantastic opportunity to experience new cultures and opportunities, and primarily to challenge our perceptions of economically developing countries, better understand the dynamics of community volunteering at an international level and to work ‘outside of our comfort zone’.

Whilst there our aim is to work with young people on an environmental sustainability service project.The service project we hope to be part of emphasises their work with grassroots local organisations, something that is particularly important to the group, as we are keen that any service project supports the local efforts already taking place. We hope to participate in a programme such as the following: 

• Educate the community (especially kids) about the importance of clean water
• Help improve water issues and the environment by planting trees
• Painting murals at schools where we have filters to celebrate our collaboration

I am so excited to be taking part in this and any donation, large or small will help so much in getting me to my £3200 goal.
