Story

Some of you know that my youngest son, Toby, is physically disabled with complex medical needs...although he is also a cheeky, fun-loving, bright 5 year old boy.

A couple of you know that I am a Trustee of a local charity called Me Too & Co. The charity works tirelessly to help disabled children and their families by providing vital therapies, practical advice, emotional support and inclusive family activities for free.

Only two of you know that I am terrified of man-made high structures! The Alps, the Rockies, Ben Nevis are all fine but the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, even the Heron Tower are definitely not fine (no more Duck & Waffle invites please!).

I am already having nightmares about going up the tower, never mind going over the edge so your support in terms of financial motivation needs to be huge. Please!

The charity's work is vital. Whilst the NHS and Local Authorities do provide some support for disabled children in terms of equipment and therapy, it is very limited and there is no support or help for parents in the constant battles to get even the basics of what these very vulnerable children need. And things are set to only get worse with the cutbacks to funding we are seeing every day. As an example, my friend Sylvie was delighted when her daughter's new wheelchair arrived - until she realised there were no wheels (sadly things like this happen all the time).

I'm sure it won't come as much of a surprise to learn that the unemployment rate in disabled people is double what it is for the population as a whole. Toucan Diversity is a social enterprise that works unfailingly to educate employers so as to provide opportunities for disabled young people to find employment and become productive members of society. My son will face considerable barriers when he is older so the more we can support organisations that aim to break down these barriers today, the better the opportunities for Toby and his peers in the future.

All funds raised by myself and the other 19 people abseiling will be split equally between Me Too & Co and Toucan Diversity. Thank you so much for your support.

Elissa
