Story
Wow thank you everyone who has sponsored me, I can't believe how many wonderful friends I have... fingers crossed.. the three peaks here I come xxx
Firstly I just want to say thank you for reading this.. As many of you know my little boy was diagnosed with Cancer (Retinoblastoma) at just 7 months old, after 6 cycles of chemotherapy and laser treatment in Birmingham Childrens Hospital for the first 12 months Thomas' tumours are all now inactive and the fight so far has been won!!
I felt it was about time I got my backside into gear and made the effort to give something back. When Thom went through his chemo we took part in a study for research into how his treatment went and hopefully this would help children in the future. I think the research that can be done is amazing and I hope you can all help in any donation possible to allow research to continue.
Thomas was also diagnosed with the Rb1 gene which means he has a risk of other types of cancers. For children who have the inheritable form of retinoblastoma like Thomas, follow-up is life long in order to check for the development of second malignancies. These malignancies are most often of the bone or soft tissues (sarcomas). It is thought that many of these are due to radiation treatment; however, even in children, who were not treated with radiation, there is an increased risk of secondary malignancies. This can be diagnosed significantly later in life and involve the lung, bladder, and lining of the body cavities. It is essential that children with the inheritable form not smoke, as this has been shown to increase the risk of secondary cancers.
I know there is always someone asking for you to sponsor them and I appreciate this isn't always at the right time... When 'The Big C' hits your family, that is never the right time either, I was on maternity leave when Thomas was diagnosed so never expected to be enduring hospital appointments, I had planned to spend my maternity leave having much more fun than that
Thanks again
