Liz's Fireworks 500 Open Water Swim

The Fireworks 500 · 5 November 2022
As those who know me are aware, in October 2015 I suffered 2 heart attacks, the second of which required emergency angioplasty to place a stent in one of my coronary arteries. I was 32, fit, healthy and with no traditional risk factors for heart disease, yet one day my world was suddenly turned upside down. No one could tell me why it had happened or it would (or will) ever happen again. The Drs didn't understand what and happened. They had no answers to my questions. It was a scary and confusing time.
Eventually it was diagnosed as Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) - a little known condition responsible for many cardiac events in (predominantly) young healthy females. At the time, information was sparse and hard to find, but research into the condition was just beginning to get off the ground, thanks to the amazing patient-led charity BeatSCAD.
BeatSCAD works closely with the Leicester Biomedical Research Centre at the Glenfield Hospital - the leading centre for excellence for SCAD in the UK, and where I was eventually diagnosed. It remains to this day that there is no known cause for SCAD and no way of knowing if it will ever happen to me again. BeatSCAD work tirelessly to raise funds to support the vital research into this life changing and often fatal condition. They aim to raise awareness amongst medical professionals, to seek answers for patients and their families and to ultimately understand why SCAD happens.
Anything you can donate to this amazing charity would be most appreciated. It quite literally is a charity very close to my heart!! ❤️
