Appeal for Helen Gould-Cooper · 26 December 2017

We provide information to guide people with cancer through the confusing options for care and lifestyle choices. Our aim is to help them make informed decisions. We simplify the complex and facilitate access to expert knowledge.

Story

Please see our recent update at the bottom of the page!     Helen is doing well after her first visit to Biomed but needs to return every 4 months or so for a couple of years.  Thankfully this is only for 5 days at a time but it was rather unexpected as we thought it was a one-off visit!  Biomed is an inspirational place with some awesome success stories.    Thank you for all your support to date.  June 2018.

Helen is my sister and lives on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire.  She enjoys walking her springer spaniels, running and aerobics and has always kept fit and healthy.

In September 2011 she was an emergency admission at Salisbury District Hospital and was found to have colon cancer.    The cancer was removed by surgery but had spread to two lymph nodes.     During the
previous 18 months she had been to her GP many times with symptoms which were thought to be stress or IBS and sadly not investigated.

6 months of adjuvant chemotherapy followed which had many side effects.  She did not know anything about building and supporting her immune system so was left in a depleted and weakened state.  Less than a year after chemotherapy finished a 6 cm tumour was found in her liver.  It was removed by keyhole surgery some two months later.

Helen had become increasingly unhappy about her care and it was at this point she started to research and found a number of wonderful professionals including  Dr Chris Etheridge a Medical Herbalist in London, Dr Kate James in Northumberland, and Dr Nicola Hembry in Clifton, Bristol.     They advised on diet and supplements and Dr Hembry also took some Circulating Tumour Cells tests.        It was found that there were many CTCs and that the cancer would be likely to return unless certain chemotherapy drugs were given.     The tests were of no interest to her oncologist and within a few weeks it became apparent that there were two further tumours in her liver and that these were inoperable.

Aggressive chemotherapy was offered with the intention of surgery later should the chemo work.  However it was made clear that the likelihood of success was slim.

Under the guidance of Dr Hembry, Helen at this point made a decision to visit Professor Vogl in Frankfurt where she received three TACE
treatments and two Microwave Ablations between Dec 2013 and April 2014.    She remained fit and active and able to work throughout these months and we are so grateful to Professor Vogl for his amazing help.

After over a year of freedom from cancer, there was a further small recurrence in Summer 2015 which was removed by keyhole surgery in
the UK.  Helen followed this by a visit to Professor Vogl three months later for localised chemotherapy to prevent a return.

All seemed to be going well and over two years passed but in early November 2017 a further small tumour was discovered. No recommendations have been received as yet regarding a way forward from the hospital in England but Helen wanted to act promptly and chose once again to visit Professor Vogl and after one TACE treatment and one Microwave Ablation the tumour was gone.

My sister has already spent many tens of thousands of pounds on these treatments abroad and also spends a considerable amount monthly on
prescribed supplements including Medicinal Mushrooms and CV247.   For several years she has followed a juicing plan and a largely vegan diet.   This has now been stepped up to include 90% raw organic food. Things are obviously going in the right direction but the latest tumour was a real shock.    The cancer has never spread other than to the liver and (apart from in 2013) the lesion has only been small and single.  The
original tumour in the bowel has never returned.  We believe that this is contained and curable if the correct regime is followed.

It seems that the problem is the late diagnosis of both the original tumour and the first liver metastasis. She has been told that systemic
rather than localised chemotherapy is needed to deal with remaining cancer cells.  Helen wants to follow a course that works with her body’s natural healing abilities rather than against and is reluctant to have treatment in the UK which is not individually targeted and which will not respect her immune system but rather destroy it.  This clearly did not work for her in 2011/12 and she does not wish to repeat the experience.

She has short listed three clinics – Chemothermia in Istanbul, St George’s in Munich and Biomed in the Bad Bergzabern, the latter
highly recommended by advisers in Germany and the UK.     She is now booked for two weeks treatment at Biomed in the early Spring which will involve immunotherapy, hyperthermia and low dose chemotherapy which she will have to take for an extended period, possibly years.    As well as the cost of the hospital stay she will have to fund the chemotherapy drugs and we have no idea how much this will cost.     She will probably also have to return to Biomed from time to time to be re-tested to ensure that the drugs used are still the best ones for her.    Chemotherapy is individually tailored and the dose is sufficient to kill cancer cells but leave normal healthy cells untouched.  There will be few or no side effects and her immune system will be supported and repaired throughout by the other treatments they offer.

We really need help with this as Helen’s funds are now very depleted and the treatment is essential to avoid further tumours.   The long term cost is unknown at the moment so this is something that we will have to provide updates on as the treatment progresses.     Initially she would like to raise £19,000 which would help cover the treatment at Biomed and hopefully several months, maybe even a year or two of low dose chemotherapy.        Your help would be so welcome and we would be so very grateful of any small amount that could be given.
