As many of you know, I have spent well over two decades working in the field of election law. And, I have enjoyed every moment of a bipartisan approach to policy making.

Now, I am excited to share with you Defending Democracy, an initiative that I am spearheading for the ABA Section of State and Local Government Law. This is an important effort to celebrate the nonpartisan work of state and local election administrators, who are coming under increasing risks of reprisal and physical attacks, as they work on the frontlines to defend and ensure our democratic process. The initiative will also showcase the successes of various parts of our voting process.

Defending Democracy works to educate the public about the important nonpartisan work of election administrators and to conduct tours of local election offices. In fact, at our recent tour, in early October 2022, of the Multnomah County Elections Division, one of our participants told me that they are sold on the security of mail ballots after seeing the procedures and safeguards used in Multnomah County, Oregon. Defending Democracy will use these tours to gather information about the electoral process in various states and localities and share them to provide transparency about and to bolster public confidence in our democratic process.
