Where your money will go
The money you raise will help to support the many exciting research projects that we’re currently funding. These include:
Smart insulin
Glucose-responsive or smart insulins would provide a person with type 1 diabetes with all of their insulin needs in a single daily dose, eliminating the need for finger prick testing, carb counting and meal-time injections. To do this, the drug would circulate in the body, turning on when it's needed and off when it's not.
Artificial pancreas
The artificial pancreas is a piece of technology that would do the job of a healthy pancreas. By combining an insulin pump, a continuous glucose monitor and a computer program it can calculate how much insulin is needed, then deliver it automatically. Trials have found it offers much better glucose control overnight, without increasing the risk of hypos (low blood glucose).
Encapsulation
Our encapsulation programme is developing implantable devices that contain the insulin-producing beta cells that people with type 1 have lost. These capsules would allow the beta cells to act as they would in a healthy pancreas, constantly sensing a person’s glucose levels and producing insulin as needed, while being protected from further immune attack.
