Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am fundraising for The Mountain Trust, an NGO which pioneers health, education and human rights programs amongst marginalised and remote communities in Nepal.
I will be travelling to Nepal over the summer to volunteer with The Mountain Trust on their Radio Guru Civic education program. This will involve researching and compiling their radio broadcasts to deliver important human rights messages to the population. I will also be involved in projects to help coordinate and document the ongoing earthquake reconstruction which is hampering the progress of the country and the education the people are able to receive.
None of the money raised from this page will go towards funding my trip. All money raised will go as a direct donation to the projects outlined to give support and exposure to the great work of The Mountain Trust.
Their Radio Guru Program empowers secondary age pupils through radio programs as an accessible form of learning which is extremely important in the country now, given the disruption following last year's earthquake. Since 2007, broadcasts have been delivered on topics related to the secondary syllabus for 6 days a week, but the appeal has been much wider than just this age bracket and also focuses on a civil education program.
This program works with other local NGOs to give the population information on their rights and legitimate expectations for the state which can be truly transformative for societal norms. The program broadcasts to 61 of 75 states with a potential audience of 16 million people to increase awareness of social issues and allows the population to have greater involvement in state and public life.
Nepal came out of a decade long civil war in 2006 which claimed more than 16,000 lives. Although there is a renewed engagement with politics now, the people are largely unaware of their human rights and the country remains blighted by a weak state, corruption and poverty. This program is therefore vitally important in engaging with the population, alongside the physical reconstruction of the country.
