We are fighting to make a world where diabetes does no harm

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

My Story.

For the London Virtual Marathon on October 3rd 2021, I'm running 26.2 miles, singing 26 Elton John songs and making 4 costume changes en route.

I think it's gonna be a long, long time... before I cross the finish line.

But I don't care because no one has done this before and I'm effectively in a race of one.  I'm going to have a lot of fun trying to sing and play and run over the course of my virtual marathon. And of course it's all for a really good cause.

Diabetes is a big, big problem that already affects many of us. And it's growing at a such pace that if we don't find solutions to this complex problem, it will start to affect us all, directly or indirectly through its knock on effects to our public services.

So this year, turning 50, and having type 2 diabetes running in my family, I'm doing my bit to reduce my own risk of developing diabetes through my training. I'm also doing my best to raise awareness of the problem through this outlandish challenge.

I’m enjoying the process documenting the project including a series of comedy training videos,  and hope to keep it in minds eye long after the event. If you’ve seen my efforts on my website or on social media, I hope they’ve made you laugh or smile.

In supporting Diabetes UK, the funds that you donate will be put to good use in finding more ways for all society to manage this growing problem. DUK's aim is to work towards a future where diabetes does no harm.

Please think about donating to my campaign.

The whole run is going to take around 8-10 hours, so it will be a good workout. As part of this I will be making strategic piano stops for a breakfast party at the lovely Toulouse Lautrec (SE11 4RN) restaurant at 10am, then up to St Pancras Station parade for a sing song with a few choir mates on Elton John's Yamaha piano which was gifted for the public to play.

I'll be playing a few songs at the Diabetes UK finishers party in Westminster and singing with other amazing Diabetes UK runners who will have finished their races when I arrive around 2.30pm, including many great runners who also suffer from the condition.

And I'll be just a couple of miles from home at that point, making a final leg to the finishing party at The Covent Garden Social Club where everyone is invited to help me finish the final handful of songs.

You'll find me running in 4 costumes, including a 'cover' costume I've designed of The Piano Suit that Elton wore at his Central Park concert in 1980. Plus you might see Donald duck playing the piano, running down part of Oxford Street - that is if my costume arrives in time.
