Story
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
I have decided to do the Trek26 Lake District on 10th June covering 26 miles. 5/6 years ago my Mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at the young age of 57 now 63 she is in a care home unable to look after herself or remember much or who people are. The last time I visited in November (as I now live 6 hours away) she was unaware I was there and presented as a shadow of herself. There has been no retirement enjoyment, making memories with her grandchildren or chasing her dreams to have a cottage by the sea. Now I can’t say that dream would have come true but now she doesn’t even get to try. I’ve watched this disease mentally take her away and now physically. From an active women to a frail lady. Anything I can raise to help this amazing charity fight this cruel disease will be greatly appreciated as anyone of us can get this. My Mum is the first on her side of the family to get this her own Mum only passed last year at a great age of 96 with very much her own mind still intact till near then end.
Many Thanks in advance for any support.
Emily
24.02.23 earlier this week I was back in Norfolk and visited my Mum. This time I felt she did recognise I was there at points but her speech made very little sense. We spent the time holding hands and walking round the care home. I haven’t always been there our relationship hasn’t always been easy but she’s my Mum and seeing her like this unable to go out and have her freedom and walk in the countryside is honestly heartbreaking. 63 she should be thinking about all the things she is going to do when she retires. I am so grateful for all the generous donations received so far, thank you.
