Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my page!

This is a short story about an amazing friends determination to live her life to the full regardless of the prognosis from her Oncologist.

A little bit about my own journey first, that has led me to want to conquer this challenge with Louisa.

I had a serious skiing accident 6 years ago that changed the way I live physically, mentally and emotionally. Looking at me now, most people would struggle to see the fall out I have from that accident, the obvious are the scars on my leg from the operations I required to save it. I can look back now and appreciate the effort that was needed to get me anywhere near taking on a challenge like this. I was supported by excellent surgeons in London and amazing physiotherapists in the UK and in France who steered me through all those tough times. My husband, Darren and our daughters Poppy and Maisy, as well as my parents, Darrens family, sisters' families and friends were all key to giving me the best shot at getting back to life with a functional leg. That journey is still going on after all this time and am still improving, still working on my strength and stability. I was pushed to all my limits and I will never forget what I gained from the whole experience.

At the same time I was going through this in the second half of 2012, Louisa and her family were dealing with the discovery of her brain tumour. PLEASE take a moment to read her incredible story. Her determination deserves to been heard.

When Lou asked me if I could accompany her to China to fulfil her lifetime ambition of walking the Great Wall, I have to admit that my thoughts immediately went to my leg and wondered if it would be up to the job. Now just a few months away and our training in full swing, I am feeling more and more confident of what we can achieve. No matter what, I feel privileged and humbled to attend such an important trip. Louisa will be our primary focus and we all look forward to crossing over the finish line with her in front. It will undoubtedly be an emotional moment that we will all savour......that is until she suggests the next one!

On March 29th 2019, a group of us will be heading out to Beijing and taken to where will start a 6 day trek along The Great Wall of China. It promises to be an incredible experience and challenging for us all. Please make a donation to spur myself,  Louisa and the team on, it will be hugely appreciated!

I AM SELF FUNDING MY TRIP SO ALL FUNDS COLLECTED WILL GO THE BRAIN TUMOUR CHARITY, the chosen charity of my amazing friend Louisa who will be leading the way.

Follow her journey on Instagram. I admin it and will bring regular updates.

So why should you sponsor me?

Even though research, drugs, support and new operating techniques have changed a lot over the yesrs, it shocked me to learn the below:-

Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.

According to the Cancer Research website only 14% diagnosed with a brain tumour , in England and Wales, survive for 1O years or more, compared to prostate cancer (84%), breast cancer (78%) and bowel cancer (54%)

0ver £500 million is spent on cancer research in the UK every year, yet less than 2% is spent on brain tumours.

Brain tumours reduce life expectancy by, on average, 20 years - the highest of any cancer.

Over 5,000 people lose their lives to a brain tumour every year

Research offers the only real hope of dramatic improvements in the diagnosis, treatment and management of brain tumours.

The Brain Tumour Charity is the leading charity in its field, fighting brain tumours on all fronts and have to date committed £41.2 million into research to date. They rely 100% on voluntary donations.
