Emily's going to Tanzania

VSO ICS** · 31 January 2020 to 31 December 2020 ·
In March 2019 I will be taking on the biggest challenge of my life so far. Having been selected for an International Citizen Service (ICS) placement, I will be spending 12 weeks living with a host family in Kamachumu, Tanzania, as a volunteer with Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO).
ICS works with communities that have specifically requested their help. It aims to inspire young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are passionate about long term community development.
The first part of my placement is a challenge to raise £800 towards the work of VSO and their ICS partners. The money raised will go towards enabling the overall costs of ICS, ensuring they can continue sending youth volunteers to the developing world to make a lasting difference in disadvantaged communities.
While on placement I will be primarily working with other volunteers to improve learning outcomes for marginalised children, especially girls.
Currently I am volunteering in an all girls school in south London, where I am seeing girls from many different backgrounds thrive and become incredible, independent young ladies that I admire. It is heartbreaking to me that girls in Tanzania do not get such opportunities to grow as individuals.
In Tanzania, girls face many challenges on account of their gender. Almost two out of five girls marry before they are eighteen, and thousands drop out of school due to pregnancy. This is something that needs to change.
Many children are not enrolling in school, instead resorting to child labour, in often exploitative, abusive conditions, in order to supplement their family’s income. For this reason ICS volunteers also work towards improving household incomes through farming.
With your help, I will be directly promoting an improved quality of teaching with a strengthened awareness of child rights and protection. Together, along with VSO, we will be fighting for a world without poverty.
Amongst other things I will be selling some artworks and running some Christmas events, so please do keep track of how I get on and what I am doing here on my JustGiving page. Any contribution from you will make a real difference to the lives of people in developing countries, so please give if you can, and thank you!
