Story

On Sunday the 26th April I'll be running around the block over and over again, until I've completed a marathon.

This will challenge me in many ways (boredom, dizziness...), not least because I've never run a marathon on road before. It might of course be easier in some respects - I can pop into my house to use the toilet, and won't have to worry about finding food and drink en route (though how to carry my phone is still presenting problems).

I'm directly inspired by Molly Weaver, who rode an incredible 130km around her back garden last weekend, and I've even copied her in supporting Women's Aid - because I simply could not think of a more worthwhile cause right now.

Why Women's Aid?

I've been lucky enough to have countless adventures over the years. I've cycled across continents, I've camped out under the stars, and I've had the privilege of finding out first-hand what a kind and welcoming place the world can be. No matter where I've travelled, I have never wanted for help or friendship.

When people ask me if it isn't dangerous for a woman to travel alone like this, I tell them that statistically it's much more dangerous to stay at home - that despite their scaremongering about murderous foreigners, women are always most likely to be killed, raped or assaulted by their domestic partners.

And now, of course, we're all at home. For me this means fewer bike adventures, and I can live with that. But for many women, this new restriction is putting them in mortal danger. Women's frontline services have already reported a massive surge in cries for help. Please help me raise money for Women's Aid, whose work is needed now more than ever.

A few words on safety:

My main priorities when planning this run have been to minimise the risk to others, to reduce the likelihood of spreading infection, and to avoid putting any burden on the NHS.

- I will start running at 5am (perhaps earlier), as there will be fewer people around in the early hours of the morning, and the air will be cooler, meaning that I sweat less.

- I will amend my route if required, to avoid putting others at risk, and I am prepared to cut the run short if I or anyone else feel unsafe.

- I will have equipment on hand to clean and sterilise any surfaces I come into contact with.

- I have consulted with my neighbours, and checked that everyone is happy for me to do this. As yet there have been no objections.

- Based on my current levels of fitness and health, I am reasonably confident that I will be able to complete the challenge without injuring myself or endangering my health.

If you have any suggestions for further precautions I can take, please do get in touch.
