The Grand Brighton Half Marathon 2020 · 23 February 2020 ·
Thank you for visiting my page!
On the 23rd February 2020, I will be running the Brighton Half Marathon in aid of Alzheimer's Society. I have chosen this cause because I have seen first hand how heartbreaking it is to watch a loved one suffer with this illness. I lost my Grandmother (Nana) in January 2012. My Grandfather (Gramps) and my Great Grandmother (Granji) are both suffering with it now. It doesn’t discriminate, it devastates lives and right now there is no cure. I am therefore challenging myself to help make a difference. Your donations and help could mean that fewer people will suffer. Together we can make a change.
There are currently around 850,000 people with dementia in the UK which is estimated to rise to 1.6 million people by 2040. Roughly 225,000 people will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes. It is set to be the UK’s biggest killer, which will affect all our futures.
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day a cure is found, they create a society where those who are affected by dementia are supported and accepted, and are able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
In order to develop treatments, and gain better knowledge of the causes of dementia, brain tissue has to be examined. £75 pays for 20 microtome bases, which slice the brain to the thickness of a human hair. Researchers can then examine the toxic proteins that cause dementia.
£30 could fund one of their Side by Side services for one hour, this means pairing people with dementia with volunteers so that they have the support they need to carry on with the hobbies and activities with are important to them.
Any donations, no matter what size, will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
