Marie Curie is here for anyone with an illness they’re likely to die from, and those close to them. Whatever the illness, wherever you are, we’re with you to the end. We bring 75 years of experience and leading research to the care we give you at home, in our hospices and over the phone.

Story

We are all touched by cancer, either directly or indirectly and some families are affected more than
others. We sisters have all been directly touched by cancer, losing our mother, Mary Fikner, in 1983
at the very young age of 42, leaving behind 6 kids. Mum died from colon cancer, a hereditary form.
Trisha was diagnosed in 2004 with FAP, the hereditary gene mutation mum had, and had to have an
operation to remove her bowel. Emma also got diagnosed with the same gene mutation and
underwent a similar surgery.
There were various losses to cancer throughout the years and in September 2013 Jane’s mother-in-
law, Betty Scanlon, died from lung cancer at the age of 65. Betty’s family have been hit particularly
hard with many of her siblings dying from various forms of cancer.
In April 2018, Emma’s husband Richard died at the young age of 44 from bowel cancer and her
mother-in-law, Eileen Adams, died less than 7 months later from ovarian cancer.
Cancer is everywhere and more and more people are being touched by it. Organisations like Marie
Curie are vital in dealing with end of life care, vital not only to the patient but also to the family circle
at a very difficult time.
The money we sisters are hoping to raise by climbing Ben Nevis on 2 nd July 2022, will be a small help
towards keeping Marie Curie available for all those that need it now and in the future. We are
grateful for any donation given to this very important, necessary organisation.
