We have now completed our fund-raising run for the Pembroke Academy of Music, and thanks to the generous support we have received, the Pembroke Academy is about to have its first ever Cello Section!
For anyone who would like to donate at this stage, we will be keeping the site open for donations until mid-October.
What is Pembroke Academy of Music?
Pembroke Academy of Music was set up in 2002 with an aim to provide musical opportunities and education to the local and immediate surrounding community of Pembroke House in Walworth. Since that time over two hundred local young people have unlocked their musical talents. The Academy now offers sixty-five student places and there are nine professional and three voluntary tutors. The tutors themselves are from varied musical traditions - Western Classical, Indian Classical, Cuban, Jazz and RnB and most are highly recorded and/or successful concert performers. Whilst maintaining a strong local performing presence, the Pembroke Academy has taken projects and collaborations beyond the immediate area of Walworth. Performances have been held at St James Piccadilly, the Glaziers Hall and the Drapers Hall. In 2007 the Academy collaborated for the first time with Pembroke College Cambridge students on two joint concerts in London and Cambridge. Such was the success of the project that this collaboration was repeated with a very successful and well-attended concert at Pembroke College Cambridge in February 2008. Patron Quotes: "At the Pembroke Academy I saw dedication and an enthusiasm for music in the teachers, inspiring a new generation of musicians from as young as five to sixteen. Such important years in the development of a human being. These children will have the privilege of knowing that “music” belongs to them for their whole lives. The Pembroke Academy is a beacon of learning in a time where the importance of connection to great music is becoming recognised as a priority – again! Bravo" - Julian Joseph (Patron)"The performing arts give children opportunities that no other activity can match. They encourage them to use and fully engage their brains, their feelings and their entire imagination. Pembroke Academy of Music is a thriving example of what the Performing Arts can achieve" (2009) - Sir Colin Davis, CH (Patron)
