Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. We’re striving for a cure, by revolutionising the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia.

Story

You heard it right! I’m going to be running London marathon 2025 for Alzheimer’s research for my gran and grandad. I randomly signed up not expecting to even be considered but here we are!

For those of who you maybe don’t know me, long story short both my grandparents were diagnosed with dementia whilst I was growing up. Although I have many happy memories with them both from my early childhood, (which I could genuinely talk about all day long if I got started!) it also comes with great sadness. As the dementia worsened their individual character and personality as I knew it disappeared in front of me. Until they weren't able to recognise me anymore, they didn’t know me as their granddaughter. I’d become just another person. How does a 8 year old understand that?

A few personal memories that stand out for me:

- Every weekend they used to take myself and my sister to the local Sainsbury’s and buy us a sweet treat! I looked forward to this every week, knowing I’d be able to sneak another sweet treat in the basket. Unfortunately, their dementia progressed quickly and this soon became a distant memory.

- From as young as 5 I remember my grandad would ask me what I want to be when I’m older and my response was always ‘I don’t know, I want to help people.’ They were both my biggest supporters in life. Sadly grandad’s dementia was too advanced for him to understand that I’d started my nursing degree and was going to be helping people liked I’d always told him. And gran sadly passed just before I started my degree.

I hope I’m making you both proud x

With all of this in mind I’ve also set myself a big target of raising £3,000 for Alzheimer’s research.

Thank you for taking the time to read my page, all your support is appreciated x
