Story
I have recently joined Cavendish Cancer Care, a charity which I am extremely passionate about. We provide emotional support to people who are affected by cancer. This can be patients, their carers, their children, parents or siblings.
Most of you will remember my beautiful sister Sarah, who was diagnosed with terminal cancer when she was just 26. Over the three and a half years that she was ill she was in and out of hospital constantly, having surgery and various types of chemo but she always dealt with her situation in such a positive and powerful way.
Sarah found that being able to talk to a counsellor, particularly when she was first diagnosed, really helped her to get her head around what she was facing. She always showed us her positive side and had a smile on her face, so this was a space where she could talk about her fears without feeling as though she was worrying us.
I also found it really helpful to have someone outside of the family to talk to about what was happening as I struggled to cope with seeing Sarah in pain and becoming weaker, and coming to terms with the prospect of no longer having my best friend in my life.
This is one of the reasons I believe that the work Cavendish Cancer Care does is vitally important to the people living with cancer in our region. Last year we supported more than 1600 local families affected by cancer at our Wilkinson street centre and directly on the wards at both Weston Park Hospital and at the Palliative Care unit at Northern General Hospital.
Every one of those people were able to pick up the phone and get an appointment within 5 working days enabling them to access a free of charge package of care and support centred around their needs.
We receive just enough statutory funding to keep our doors open for about two weeks each year, put simply we wouldn’t be here without the
support of the local community and people like you supporting challenges like the Sheffield 10k.
£380 would cover all the costs associated with supporting one person and providing them with an individualised package of care centred around their needs. Cavendish Cancer Care is about seeing the person not the disease, so this time and therapy is vital for them. Please help me reach my target!
