I decided to enter the Great North Run half marathon, when my good friend Clare Lawson said she would be running in memory of her mother-in-law and raising money in the process for Pancreatic Cancer.
My dear cousin, Paul Wicken died 5 years ago from Bowel Cancer, aged only 37 and I've been wanting to find a way to fund raise in his memory ever since and this feels a fitting way to do so. It will be a challenge running 13 miles from Newcastle to South Shields in September but I'm up for it with Pauly very much in mind.
Paul had a dry, wicked sense of humour, a big, kind heart and above all loved his family. His loss is felt by us greatly. The courage he showed during his treatment and his 18 month long battle was phenomenal. He was so brave undergoing complex ground breaking operations to help give him more time. The trouble he faced was that there are not enough case histories to help guide doctors as to effective treatments. Hopefully this will change.
If I can help to raise money to fund further research into the treatment of bowel cancer in young people like Pauly, maybe in the not too distant future more lives, both young and old, will be saved rather than lost to this horrible, horrible disease.
Thank you for any donation you can give.
I'd better get my trainers on and try to run two laps of Knole Park!
Thank you.
