We fund research and provide support to improve blood cancer patients' lives

Story

In March 2018 one of my oldest friends Lucy was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, which is an aggressive type of blood cancer.

Lucy and I have been good friends for as long as I can remember. We met aged 3 at preschool, doing finger paintings, and we haven’t looked back since. We went to the same primary school and secondary school and have spent countless hours together in lessons, playing games, exploring the countryside, and more recently dancing in sweaty clubs.

Lucy went through 7 months of chemo and immunotherapy which ended in September, but unfortunately, since then, her cancer came back quickly and aggressively. In November she began a different type of 'salvage' chemotherapy, to be followed by a stem cell transplant, which looked like it was doing the trick but unfortunately the cancer has become resistant to chemo.

She is now heading for a new pioneering, breakthrough type of treatment called CAR-T therapy which will involve collecting her own immune cells, genetically engineering them to attack the lymphoma and returning them to Lucy.

She is the strongest person I know and will continue to fight this as she has been for the past year.

On 28th April 2019, I will be running the London Marathon to raise Money for the charity Bloodwise. I have never run a Marathon before and I will have a gruelling training schedule in front of me, so can I please ask that you donate generously to make this all worthwhile!

Lucy decided Bloodwise was the charity for us to raise funds for because of the following reasons:

1. Bloodwise is currently committed to helping fund 161 research projects around the UK, all of which are enabling researchers to make findings that improve outcomes for people affected by blood cancer.

2. Bloodwise provides everyone affected by blood cancer with information they can trust, in language they understand. Through this information and support services, Bloodwise empowers and connects people affected by blood cancer so that they can live their life to the full.

3. Bloodwise is the voice of the 240,000 people in the UK with blood cancer at senior levels of Government, Parliament and the NHS.
