Story
4 years ago Emmas Grandma was diagnosed with dementia and more recently she has been battling the illness at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital. Annas boyfriends Grandad was diagnosed with dementia in the last few years of his life.
Emma and Anna would like to raise awareness for this charity and sponsorship to help support future & current dementia sufferers.
Dementia has a number of symptoms including memory loss and problems with communication. Dementia also leads to a reduction in a person's abilities and skills in carrying out daily activities such as washing, dressing, cooking and caring for own self.
The later stages of dementia lead to immobility, incontinence and further memory loss. Problems with swallowing are also common in the later stages of dementia due to the person's muscles and reflexes no longer working properly. Dementia sufferers are also prone to further infection such as pneumonia. Unfortunately there is still no cure for dementia.
According to the Alzheimer's Society there are around 800,000 people in the UK with dementia. One in three people over 65 will develop dementia, and two-thirds of people with dementia are women.
Anna and I are running the Windermere Marathon for Dementia UK on 19th May 2013.
