Virtual Great North Run 2020 · 13 September 2020 ·

For pet owners experiencing homelessness, a pet is often their only source of support. Street Paws helps hostels to become pet-friendly and provides free veterinary care to homeless pet owners, ensuring they do not have to choose between their pet and a safe place to sleep.

Story

I have been a keen canicross runner with my 4 dogs for the last few years and this year I have the unique opportunity to complete the Great North Run with them! Its an exciting challenge as my longest distance to date is 10 miles! Even though I am sure they can run the full distance, my plan is to run with Henry & Syd for the first half, then swap to George & Ralph. (Michael will be providing pit stop support!)

I have decided to fundraise for Street Paws as having worked in the homeless sector I know how important the support they provide can be for people experiencing homelessness. I also think this is a charity that would get the dogs approval!

I know how much my dogs mean to me and to lose your best friend as well as your home would be devastating. There are very few hostels that accept dogs in the North East and often people must make the difficult choice to sleep on the streets or give up their dog.

Street Paws help by providing emergency kennels for dogs to allow people valuable time to find new accommodation or access NHS treatment. They have installed purpose built kennels in hostel grounds and provide veterinary treatment for dogs whose owners are homeless. I have also found them to be a friendly and approachable team who really care about both the people and the dogs.

I really appreciate any donations for this very good cause and if you want to find out more please check out their Facebook page.
