Story

WILL YOU WALK WITH ME FOR PARKINSON’S UK?
25th January 2020 1pm in Ilkley

I always knew I had loving and supportive friends, and this was totally endorsed when you all helped me raise an amazing £4,500 for Parkinson‘s UK on my 50th birthday in October 2019. (For anyone who doesn’t know, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 3 1/2 years ago at 46.)

Now I am asking you to really dig deep by joining me. Will any of my family and friends (and their dogs!) come and join me on 25th January at 1pm in Ilkley to walk for Parkinson‘s UK?

Originally, I asked you to join me on 25 January at Kirkstall Abbey for an organised 5K run (a challenge for me after four knee operations and with very little left knee cartilage left) but I realised there were very limited spaces available for that. So instead I’d love it if you could come for a walk/run with me to publicise that Parkinson’s can affect anyone no matter what age or sex and to raise much needed funds for research into finding something to cure, or at least slow the progression of, Parkinson’s - currently there is nothing available.

If you (and your families/friends of any age or ability) are willing to walk (or run) with me and my boys, in solidarity and friendship, I’d be absolutely delighted. I walk rigorously with friends twice a week to try to keep my Parkinson’s symptoms at bay for as long as possible - I believe exercise is more beneficial to me at the moment than any available medication, which tends to have detrimental side effects.

Also, I’d ask you to consider making a donation in advance on this page. My suggestion is a minimum donation of £10 per adult and £5 per child but that’s entirely up to you. When making your donation, please state clearly how many people you are coming with,, so I know how many people to expect.

Providing the weather is kind to us, I intend us to set off from my house at 1pm, Heber’s Ghyll Drive at 1.10pm (at the  bottom of the walk over the bridges up onto the moor - park on the road just past Premiere Park on the left) and Darwin Gardens car park off Wells Road at 1.45pm. Our final destination will be The Cow and Calf pub where everyone will be able to get a drink. For anyone who wants to go a bit further, the boys and I will be walking back from the Cow and Calf Pub to home.

The first part of the walk from my house up to the moor  is an uphill climb all the way. If you want something easier, join us at Darwin Gardens. The walk from there up to The Cow and Calf Pub is a gentler uphill gradient.

If the weather isn’t kind, we may need to do a valley walk instead. I’ll post  details in the couple of days beforehand if necessary.

If for any reason you can’t do the actual walk, maybe you’d think of doing a walk or a run local to you that day, or virtually walking/running/exercising with me, or making a donation regardless.

Thanks!
