Hackney Half Marathon 2023 · 21 May 2023 ·
Short Version:
- Emma’s had cancer, had a great medical team supporting her but can’t actually run herself (but to be honest couldn’t before either)
- We as non-runners are stepping up to raise some cash so other women can access amazing care that an unnamed other hospital did not deliver 👀
- Plus we want Emma to realise how much she means to us ♥️

Why St Bart’s?
In the UK every 10 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. In December 2022 our partner/daughter/sister/friend (not all at once), Emma, was diagnosed too. After having a terrible experience at another hospital, she moved to St Bart's for her treatment where the care has been beyond amazing.
The Breast Team at St Bart’s listen carefully, have nurses available via a drop-in and helpline, and take a personalised approach to ensure good cosmetic outcomes. Somehow they even make it a positive experience when helping find a post-surgery bra and yanking out 15cm plastic drains from her chest.
Where does the money go?
We want to do our bit to help by fundraising to create a Breast Cancer Centre at St Bart’s. It’ll improve surgery and aftercare for people in East London which currently has poorer outcomes than most of the UK. The centre will make a significant contribution to research to improve care across the globe. Emma’s experience of excellent care at St Bart’s should be more common and we trust them to work on the important issues for people like her.

Only a half marathon?? Yes: this is embarrassingly challenging
We’re 8 weeks to go. None of us are runners. So far during our “training” we have:
- Rescued a deliveroo driver out a canal (Olly)
- Only ran when needing to escape DIY tasks (James)
- Got lost and hopped on the tube home (Will)
- Cried every time they got shin splints (Alicia)
- Ran in swimming shorts (Dan)
- Clung on to the distant memory of running a 10k in 2011 (Steve)
So please send prayers, thoughts and cash xoxo
