This coming year will be one of many to learn and grow.
Raleigh expeditions provide the unique opportunity to focus on both personal growth and global awareness. They construct their expeditions in three parts: community, environment, and adventure. Raleigh stood out to me because they place focus on both the people of Tanzania and the volunteers themselves, ensuring a positive and influential experience for everyone.
- Sanitation: Only between 10% and 33% of the population in Tanzania have access to improved sanitation, with the figure much lower in rural areas. We may build demonstration sanitation units to show local tradesmen that these units can be made affordably and with available resources.
- Education: Elementary lessons are taught in Kiswaili until secondary school when all lessons are only offered in English. This results in a high dropout rate for those struggling with English. We may be helping to construct and improve facilities used for extracurricular activities and after school clubs where kids will be encouraged to use and learn English outside of a lesson environment.
- Udzungwa Farming Project: Communities that live close to elephant migration corridors face frequent damage to their crops and water supplies. To prevent this human and animal conflict we will be building fences using natural deterrents - chillis and beehives!
- The Rocket Stove: A rocket stove is an efficient, innovative stove that is being introduced to remote communities in Tanzania. On average each family from these communities spends 2 hours a day collecting the essential firewood needed to provide the family with food. As well as building the stoves, we may also be involved in educational programmes with the local communities and school children to educate them about the stoves and their required maintenance. Once installed the stoves reduce the amount of firewood required by two thirds, freeing up valuable time for the families and reducing CO2 emissions.
Raleigh International will visit some of the most beautiful and untouched areas of Tanzania on the adventure phase. I look forward to the following opportunities such as trekking south east of Iringa and North West of the spectacular Kilombera Valley. This Highland region is rarely visited by outsiders, both from Tanzania or overseas. The region takes in beautiful ridges, stunning peaks, wonderful forests and alluring waterfalls. The trek will consolidate environmental and community issues with the personal development involved in this challenging adventure. I will have the opportunity to meet and visit extremely remote local communities.
Environmentally we will ensure that no negative footstep behind my group and I. Going back to basics, we will be self-sufficient, carrying everything we need with us. We will camp at night and learn survival and camp craft skills. We will also have the opportunity to shower in the waterfalls of the highlands and become some of the privileged few who have had the opportunity to see this unspoilt and beautiful part of Tanzania.
Every donation made benefits Raleigh International in every effort mentioned above and more. They are based in Tanzania and a number of other countries around the world year round. As well as contributing to their goal of global improvment your donation will bring me one step closer to getting involved in such an amzing opportunity.
I'm beyond excited and so grateful to everyone who is here to support me along the way.
