Erin's Charity Fundraiser for YoungMinds · 20 June 2023

Southampton RAG is fundraising for YoungMinds, the UK's leading charity fighting for children and young people's mental health with a skydive in June 2023!

Story

We've decided to skydive with Endeavours Adventures for YoungMinds to show young people how they feel matters.

Raising money for charity and skydiving are both things that have been on my bucket list for the longest time, and now I finally get to do them – at the same time!

Anyone who knows me will agree that I am a strong advocate for maintaining good mental health, so donating to an incredible charity such as YoungMinds was a perfect fit.

YoungMinds is a charity that specialises in advocating for the likes of younger people's mental health, as well as supporting those who care for them. They provide the resources needed to prevent people reaching crisis point, and enabling people to access the support they need, and subsequently giving young people the opportunity to feel like they can reach their full potential.

Did you know?

  • 1 in 6 children aged 5-16 years were identified as having a probable mental health problem in July 2020
  • Less than 1 in 3 young people with a mental health condition can get access to the relevant NHS care & treatment they need
  • Since the onset of Covid-19, 80% of young people with mental health needs agreed that the pandemic has made their mental health worse

Having a charity like YoungMinds is so important, especially whilst having statistics like these.

Want to know how your donations could make a difference?

  • £15 ensures a Helpline Volunteer is on the end of the phone to provide information and support to distressed parents.
  • £30 will support training for a Young Activists to have the skills and confidence to speak about mental health issues.
  • £40 could help a parent or carer get the advice and support they need to improve their child's mental health through our Parents Helpline.
  • £45 gives a parent or carer a 50-minute telephone call with a qualified mental health professional who can provide clinical advice and guidance.

Therefore, £600 ensures 40 helpline volunteers are at the end of the phone to provide information and support to distressed parents.

A quick summary of info taken from the YoungMinds website:

'We’re the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people's mental health.

We provide young people with tools to look after their mental health. Our website is full of advice and information on what to do if you're struggling with how you feel. We empower parents and adults who work with young people, to be the best support they can be to the young people in their lives. And we give young people the space and confidence to get their voices heard and change the world we live in.

We are a charity that provides information and advice to young people, and parents and carers. Take a look at our guide to support for information about how Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) work, including information on how you can get help from CAMHS, what happens at an assessment, what your rights are and more.

According to the latest NHS figures, nearly half a million young people are being referred for mental health problems every month, with many not being able to get the support they need. That's more young people than ever before seeking support - and most aren’t getting the help they need.

This needs to change. With your support, it can.'
