Hey guys!!
My name is Ese Akpobi, and on April 22nd I will be flying to Ghana with a group of volunteers from the UK on a 10 week ICS placement!
I will be working with Challenges Worldwide; a charity that helps to grow enterprises in emerging economies. The program is 90% government funded, and the 10% of money i'll raise goes back into ICS & the businesses we’ll be supporting.
My individual target is £800. To raise this I will be doing Tough Mudder on the 24th March in Stratford! It’s a 5km run with 10 INSANE obstacles! As it’s local you’re all welcome to watch me attempt this monster of a course and probably get a face full of mud in the process! If you’re feeling adventurous you could also sign up and run with me (the more the merrier!) Plus, I’ll also be doing a few other events such as a games night and selling a few things!
I’d be very grateful for any donations towards this trip, big or small. I'm very passionate about international volunteering and below is an explanation of what I will be doing for those 10 weeks in Ghana.
As a volunteer I will be working side-by-side with local business owners, and living with a host family in the local community. The first 3 weeks is spent learning & finding new ways to improve a local business. Examples include finding effective ways to manage its finances, creating a marketing plan or assisting with product development. The remainder of the trip is spent implementing these changes, and providing the owners with strategies to continue growing businesses that generate income, sustainable economic growth and employment.
The ICS program is demanding but hugely rewarding. It is a great opportunity for personal development and a chance to help with the alleviation of poverty.
We have many opportunities in the UK to access employment and funding towards growing buisnesses. However, it is much more difficult or near impossible to find this help in developing countries. This is also a reason I'd love to work internationally for an enterprise charity. I believe everyone has the right to earn a decent living and not have to rely on aid. A secure income is the first step to ending the cycle of poverty.
Thanks so much & feel free to share my page!
