Story
Espy joined UCL in May 2003. She was recruited as PA for David Ingram who was then the Head of Department for the Centre for Health Informatics and Multidisciplinary Education (CHIME) but within a year of Espy’s arrival she took over as manager of CHIME. She was an incredibly hard working and dedicated administrator in a small department that was somewhat isolated from UCL’s support systems, with the consequence that teaching and research staff, and students expected rather more than they should have done from the admin team. Espy was always incredibly conscientious and determined not to let anyone down, however hard she had to work. She took real pride in the competent execution of administration, be it a well run Exam Board, an Induction Programme or an Open Day.
The changing profile of CHIME, and its merger into the Institute of Health Informatics, meant that the focus of the admin team was increasingly on the support of teaching and dealing with a complex and varied body of students. As the number students grew and the variety of programmes offered increased, Espy’s role grew more demanding but she always ensured that students were well looked after. Espy was always ambitious for her team and keen to see programmes grow and prosper. She liked to organise social events and open days to promote CHIME and the IHI. She pushed for us to be more open to international students and rightly so.
As dozens of students can testify she really really cared, as evidenced by the thoroughness with she approached her duties. She will be missed by all of us, especially those who have, for years, relied on her competence, rigour and dedication.
