The Highland Tiger faces extinction in the wild. Can you help to support a future for the wildcat in Scotland?

Story

The 7th annual 'Essentia's birthday charity livestream' is upon us! And it's on Essentia's ACTUAL birthday this year.

Quill18 & Essentia will be playing games, chatting with viewers, and generally making merry all day, Saturday, March 9th, 2019. Join us for some fun, wish Essentia a happy birthday, and help us do some good in the world.

You can find us at http://www.twitch.tv/quill18 on March 9th, beginning at 12 noon GMT [7 am EST], and ending when we're just too tired to go on any longer!

BTW, those of you in the UK have the option of donating by texting VWAS78 £5 [or £1, £2, £3, £4, or £10] to the number 70070! Your donation will be added to this fundraising page and our shared goal.

Charity Info:

This year’s chosen charity, as voted on by YOU, our livestream viewers, is the national ‘Scottish Wildcat Action’ project, via their founding partner, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland. This project aims to identify & properly address the key factors contributing to the rapid decline of this extremely endangered species, and work with their many partners across Scotland on conservation of this 'Highland tiger' before it's fully extinct. Losing any species to extinction is a blow to our planet and to us all. #SaveOurWildcat!

From the project website: "[SWA is] the first national conservation plan with a vision to restore viable populations of Scottish wildcats north of the Highland fault line. We are committed to:

  • Working with local people in wildcat priority areas to reduce the risks of hybridisation, disease and accidental persecution;
  • Breeding healthy wildcats for later release to bolster the population through a conservation breeding programme;
  • Gathering extensive data and sharing our findings to improve understanding of this elusive predator."

There's thought to be fewer than 100 purebred Scottish Wildcats left in the world - perhaps only 30 in the wild. It's truly 'now or never' for this little wild cat. Let's do what we can to help! For Gilbert (our beloved non-wildcat furbaby who passed last summer), for the future of Scotland's ecosystem, for the development of conservation science that could help many other species in the future, and just because... cats, you guys! :)
