 CYCLE CHALLENGE

 LAND’S END TO JOHN O’GROATS 14-25 MAY

On the 15 May I am joining my brother Alastair, sister Alex and 11 other riders to cycle in aid of the Bob Champion Cancer Trust from Land’s End to John O’Groats (Le JOG)

  • Cycling from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, the entire length of mainland Britain is a classic cycling challenge that many dream of.....!

  • Starting at Land’s End on the south westerly tip of England, we pedal our way through Cornwall, over Dartmoor and north along the Welsh border, skirting the Lake District into Scotland, via lochs and the highlands to the North Coast and John O’Groats.
  •

  • We will cover almost 1,000 miles in 12 days, passing through some of the most stunning and remote countryside in the British Isles.
  •

Having recently hit 50 and in 25 years only used a bicycle to navigate from home to the local pub this is quite a challenge for me and I certainly expect some pain!

The motivation is our family’s involvement in the incredible story of Bob Champion and his fairy tale win on Aldaniti in the 1981 Grand National horse race, after a lengthy struggle to beat cancer. The Bob Champion Cancer Trust was established soon after and the intent of our Cycle Challenge is to raise additional funds for the continuation of their good work.

I would be extremely grateful if you could sponsor us and make this challenge even more worthwhile. I have included further information about the Bob Champion Trust below and we would all be extremely appreciative of any donation.

Thank You for your support!

THE BOB CHAMPION CANCER TRUST.

After Bob Champion and Aldaniti won the 1981 Grand National, the interest and enthusiasm generated by "racing’s greatest fairytale" led to the foundation in 1983 of The Bob Champion Cancer Trust. Five years later, nearly to the day of the victory, the Bob Champion Cancer Research Unit was opened within the Royal Marsden NHS Trust Hospital in Sutton, Surrey.

The Trust’s commitments have extended beyond the Unit with two patient-related projects; the Aldaniti Rehabilitation Unit plus the Bob Champion Lounge, a leisure area for those having prolonged in-patient care.

"Prostate cancer has become the most common cancer in men overtaking lung cancer..."

The Bob Champion Research Centre for Urological Cancer forms part of the first male dedicated cancer research centre in the UK and helps bring together research expertise into prostate, testicular and bladder cancers.

"About 27,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year..."

Our aims are to improve methods of detection and treatment, to identify cancer genes, and ultimately to eradicate male cancers.

 The race so far...

The success of The Bob Champion Cancer Trust in the research field owes much to their policy of rapid assessment for funding of carefully selected research projects, thereby opening the way to early investigation of any potential advances in treatment.
