Story
I've been toying with the idea of doing this Triathlon for several years. If I put it off any longer I may get too old. I do hope you will support me by making a donation to my chosen charity,"Friends of Conakry Refugee School".
The charity was started by my friend Ruth whose daughter Tanya was a volunteer working in the school in Conakry (Guinea). In 2004 she telephoned home to say the school was facing imminent closure due to lack of funds. That phone call resulted in the first of many donations to keep the school open and to help it thrive. In 2007 the Friends of Conakry Refugee School became a registered charity. The students are refugees, or the children of refugees, from the civil wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Using funds from the charity a school meals' programme was set up for the 500 children attending the school.
The Ebola Crisis forced all schools in Guinea to close in 2014. Funds had to be raised to put infection prevention measures into place. Guinea is still not free of Ebola, but the school has opened again.
I've chosen this charity because the children it helps face so many challenges: fleeing from the traumas of civil war, being refugees, surviving the Ebola outbreak.
Please give what you can and pass on this appeal to colleagues, friends and family.
I shall be swimming, cycling and running over the next 5 months to prepare myself. This is no hardship compared to the challenges that the less fortunate in the world face everyday.
