This March I will be taking part in The London Walk, walking
26 miles through the night, joined by several of my wonderful colleagues to support people who have been affected by homelessness.
Homelessness is a dangerous, lonely and traumatising
experience, which can often lead to a diminished sense of self-worth and low expectations about what people feel they can achieve in life.
The effects of being homeless are long lasting, impacting on both mental and physical health.
For 20 years, Streetwise Opera have endeavoured to bring people together, to rebuild their self-esteem and reconnect with their
community using creativity, music and singing as a tool to empower and inspire. This enables those who have experienced homelessness to be defined by something other than their past and see themselves as creative people, with talent to share with the world.
Streetwise Opera has always believed that opera and the arts are for everyone and anyone, and through their work we can give some of the most marginalised people in society a voice and a platform to feel seen and heard.
I’ve always has a strong passion for the arts and believe that creativity should be accessible to all, and not restricted the privileged few.
Since joining the team in August 2021, I’ve been privileged to meet so many talented performers and hear their stories. I love seeing first-hand the joy and impact that Streetwise Opera’s work has brought to their lives and seeing them grow and flourish through weekly sessions. This has only fuelled my belief in the power of the arts and to strive to continue the important work we do. Hence why I have decided to walk 26 miles overnight in London!!
With artistic opportunities becoming increasingly limited and a huge cost of living crisis, there is more need than ever for the work that we do.
It would mean the world to me to have your support, however big or small. Every penny will help us ensure that Streetwise Opera can continue its transformative work.
