Story
Thanks for visiting our JustGiving page.
This September a team of four students from Warwick University’s branch of Engineers Without Borders will be in Tanzania installing a renewable energy system for rural electrification and training locals in . Your donation will help provide the rural community in Kemgesi with a sustainable source of energy.
Who what and where? In the village, Kemgesi, near the Serengeti region a co-operative 'Better Life' has been established; working with this group and with a local NGO ‘I Love Windpower’, our team are developing a renewable energy system that includes: a wind turbine built last year, a new turbine to be built this year and solar panel installations.
Background. The village of Kemgesi has not had electricity before now.
The community have shown their willingness to adopt the technology. The local school has just been wired up in the last few months ready to distribute the power. Part of our work also involves training the locals by teaching them about how the technology works and how to maintain it.What difference will your donation make? We need to cover the costs of the materials for the turbines and to purchase the solar panels. This project is designed with sustainability in mind hence why we are also running workshops for the locals. As long as the sun keeps shining and the winds keep blowing this community will have energy and the power to develop their skills and businesses. Being able to light up the classrooms means classes can go on for longer in the afternoon/evening, adults will be able to re-train for new jobs or businesses. The locals have stated a desire and need to diversify away from their main source of income of agriculture due to increasingly uncertain climate conditions. Having energy will enable many new activities such as internet cafes and phone charging points.
What have we done so far? The collaboration for this ‘Member-led Partnership’ project has meant an on-going dialogue with key stakeholders in the community, and the local NGO and continuous development of the project plans. Since December when this year’s group got together we’ve been working on collecting funds in any way possible. Applying for grants and requesting sponsorship from various companies. We have been successful on many occasions but we still have a way to go and we'd really appreciate your help!
