Story
In February of this year, I received some of the worst news that a parent could hear, that my child had been diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer that required a particularly lengthy treatment which would still leave difficult odds of survival. 8 months on, having been through chemotherapy, major surgery, a stem cell transplant, radiotherapy and more sleepless nights than I care to think about, Agnes has made us as parents incredibly proud with how she has fought through every stage of the treatment so far, and even through some difficult complications, she can still keep a smile on her beautiful little face.
Throughout our time in hospital at Leeds General Infirmary, one charity above all others gave us the space, support and care to be able to spend every minute possible by Agnes' side, and we want to do something to try and give back to them, the Candlelighters.
The Candlelighters gave us a true home from home, a room in the Cottage, only a short walk from the hospital meant that we could try and some rest. Not only that, some small things that people may take for granted, a shower, a warm meal, or a comfortable bed, they provided for us when we needed it the most. The staff do everything they can in such difficult situations to try and give families the support and guidance that they need and to keep them going whilst they look after their children. They offer mental, physical and financial support to so many families going through journeys like ours and the work they do goes beyond words.
So, to the fundraising. A chance conversation about facial hair (or the lack of it) in our office at the University of York gave one us a spark of an idea. Why don't 4 young (ish) men highlight the great cause of Movember, whilst also trying to raise money for the Candlelighters! With the approval of our team and colleagues alike, we stand ready, to try and grow a moustache with all our might for such a brilliant cause. All are welcome to join us as we embark on this quest!
