Story

Jeffrey Skidmore writes...

'I have always valued the loyalty and support of our audiences. Through your attendance, you are already doing one of the most important things you can for us by providing audiences for ‘live’ music.  But, I want to invite you to go one step further and consider becoming a member of our HOST OF ANGELS.

'Since launching the Host of Angels during our 40th anniversary celebrations, I have been greatly touched by the commitment and generosity shown to us by such a wide variety of individual donors.

'The Host of Angels’ support is what gives us the confidence in these uncertain times to continue to pursue our vision for the development of young singers and to go on exploring and expanding the choral repertoire through research and commissioning.  It is good to know that Angels share my belief in the power of music, and especially the human voice, to enrich our lives and the lives of those around us.

'Ex Cathedra is an amazing community of musicians who are not only passionate about what they do but put an extraordinary range of talents at our service, enabling us to perform Stockhausen one day and Gabrieli (d.1612) the next day, to record French Baroque music with Carolyn Sampson as well as previously unrecorded Britten stage plays, to deliver our groundbreaking Singing Playgrounds programme to hundreds of primary schools across Birmingham this year, and to deliver weekly sessions of Singing Medicine to wards on three hospitals in the Midlands.

'However, public funding for the arts continues to be squeezed with a further £12,000 reduction in funding from Birmingham City Council notified for 2014-15.  This means it is becoming ever more challenging for us to present high quality concerts, to research and commission, to enable talented student singers make a successful transition to professional careers, and to introduce thousands of children a year to the joys and benefits of singing.

'Your support will help us continue to deliver these activities, which I believe are so important.  Please be an Angel, if you are not already, and become a closer member of the Ex Cathedra family.'
