Concerning the US sanctions against Iran, we are facing severe problems for fundraising, which might adversely affect our activities to save wildlife in Iran. Consequently, the Iranian Cheetah Society(ICS) receives international donations through its close partner World Land Trust. WLT is a UK-based non-profit organization that is devoted to protecting the most biologically important and threatened habitats across the globe.

Through the past decade, The Iranian Cheetah Society has mostly monitored protected areas with evidence of Asiatic Cheetah presence. ICS monitoring results have shown a decrease in population in all studied regions. Some areas show zero new births, and in others, the mortality rate is higher than the birth rate. According to recent studies, the cheetah population estimated to be less than 40 individuals.

These concerning estimations have encouraged the ICS to look for cheetahs in free and less studied areas rather than protected areas where had left us in despair.

The "Explorers of Hope" team is an effort towards finding new cheetahs in the areas in the Iranian desert where weren't surveyed before.

The ICS is attempting to observe and report all evidence about cheetah presence in Iran with the help of national contribution and public participation and is hoping to be able to identify more cheetah individuals in the country.

The Explorers of Hope group started work in spring 2020 and publicly releases functional and financial reports every once in a while. You, too, can join the journey in search of Asiatic Cheetahs.

How the Team will work?

ICS has started registration for local volunteers that are enthusiastic about participating in this country-scale search. These participants could be herders, farmers, rangers, or just a local person who is interested in Cheetah conservation.

The volunteers will gather reports from their area. Our experts will consider the information. The team will travel to areas that have promising reports to explore the field. Camera-traps may also be implemented.

Data will be gathered using different approaches, and finally, all reliable data will add to our database. The database is already shared with the Iranian Department of Environment.

This project's findings can change the future of Asiatic Cheetah in Iran. It will make clear for everyone that how many Cheetahs can we expect beyond official state protected areas. In the case of receiving no reliable reports, breeding of Cheetah in captivity would become a priority for cheetahs.
