Sightsavers' vision is of a world where no one is blind from avoidable causes and where visually impaired people participate equally in society.

Story

***Momentous day (31st January 2010) - first 10 miler chalked up!!!***

Hello and thanks for coming to our page. On 18 April 2010 we will be running in the first Brighton Marathon. This is a big challenge for a pair of non-running cyclists (one of whom didn't own running shoes until this week) who don't even particularly like running.

However, when Team Sightsavers called for last minute volunteers to step up to the plate we couldn't resist. It's going to be a massive challenge but we are motivated to be running for a great charity. I (Marina) work for Sightsavers and have been very lucky to visit Sightsavers' projects in India and Tanzania. Imagine losing your sight for no other reason than lack of money or eye care services in your area. I can't imagine anything worse considering that a 20min cataract operation costs just £17! I have met children and adults whose lives have been completely transformed. Saving and restoring sight is the largest part of our work but we do much more than that - we train eye surgeons, help visually-impaired children go to school and blind adults gain employment. I'd better not dwell on this any longer. All I can say is that I am really proud to be working for Sightsavers :-)

Anyway, back to running. Training is going well (well, we've started) and with luck and a fair wind we'll finish on the big day before roads re-open to public traffic.

Thanks for any donations and we hope some of you can also come along and cheers us on (and help carry us home if needed).
