Story

It's been a couple of years, but Farebrother are putting their walking boots on again....

Like the majority of you, the Farebrother team have been frustrated at the amount of time we've had to stay at home over the last 18 months. We are also aware, and concerned, at the impact that the various lockdowns have had on small local charities, who rely so heavily on donations and fundraising support to survive. As such, we at Farebrother have decided to do something about it....

On Friday 1st October, the whole of the Farebrother team will walk from Tower Bridge to Putney, following the River Thames, and back again, covering approximately 42km in around 8-10 hours, to raise money for Coram's Fields - a children's and local community charity based in Midtown - an area we are so passionate about.

Please give generously so that Coram's Fields can continue to provide their incredible, and much needed, support and services to the children and families who rely on them so much. Please see below more information on the amazing work that Coram's Fields do.

In 1936, Coram’s Fields was established for the benefit of children and young people on the site of the former Foundling Hospital. We are located in the Borough of Camden and support children and young people from across Camden and neighbouring Boroughs.

We support children and young people across our local community in two ways. Firstly, we are a safe haven for play, a community hub, and the largest green space in our local area. We provide an array of engaging and recreational facilities that meet the needs of children and young people, supporting their mental and physical wellbeing. Across our seven-acre site, you can find: a park and playgrounds, a wildlife garden, a paddling pool, a sports court and three football pitches. All this is available free of charge for children and young people.

Coram's Fields is the garden that many local children, young people and families don't have at home. Four in ten local children live in poverty, and families face living in overcrowded accommodation. Our green space and play and sports facilities are a lifeline. "A place that teaches freedom to children and is a refuge for their carers. I would not have survived bringing two kids up in a tiny flat in King's Cross without it."

Secondly, we provide a range of onsite community services, which are designed to further the educational, emotional and social development of children and young people from ages 0 through to  9. Our services support local children and young people facing multiple levels of disadvantage.

Under 5’s Drop-In: The space, staffed by our qualified Early Years practitioner, is equipped with a small soft play space (for under 2’s), reading corner, home corner and creative zone as well as a dedicated, undercover outdoor play area with sand and water play. The service
is vital for local new parents experiencing isolation to build local support networks.

Nursery: Delivered by a qualified and experienced Nursery staff team, children in the Nursery feel the full benefit of the outdoor environment on offer including our adventure playgrounds, sand and water play, growing spaces and wildlife garden.

Out of School Club: Our skilled play workers provide an environment where children take ownership of their play space to help them develop new skills, find out about themselves through giving them opportunity to discover their abilities and interests and learn about the world around them. Our Generations project works with older children as they transition to youth centre age.

Sports Programme: Our Sports Team are qualified and passionate about bringing the power of sport to children and young people at no cost. The Programme provides a structured range of sports from football to fencing, improving mental and physical wellbeing of participants. Young people can gain sports accreditations and volunteer within the programme.
