Read Easy Hackney is a small, rapidly-expanding community-led group whose purpose is to teach adults to learn to read by offering one-to-one tuition. It is estimated that 15% (that is over 5 million) of adults in England are functionally illiterate (i.e. have a reading age at or below that of an 11-year old), and that around 2.4 million adults around us in the UK either can’t read at all or struggle with this most basic requirement for everyday life. Read Easy Hackney is tackling this problem locally head on.
