Brighton Marathon 2021 · 12 September 2021 ·
This will be my 4th running of the Brighton Marathon, with the 1st event (April 2017) being my first ever Marathon run.
With a whole winter of training behind me, I took part in the UK’s second most popular marathon – Brighton, on Sunday 9th April 2017 and successfully completed the 26.2 mile course in 5 hours – despite the sweltering 21c heat (exceptional for early April!)
12,500 runners took part in the 2017 event, with over 150,000 spectators lining the route - providing a huge helping of support – with lots of cheering, music, bands and the local radio station – there was a real ‘festival’ atmosphere and the whole city came together to get behind all of the runners.
My chosen charity for the Brighton Marathon was the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), initially due to my brother Darren being diagnosed with MND in Autumn 2015. Darren’s mobility, speech, eating and breathing were all severely impacted upon as the disease progressed. Sadly, he passed away on Sunday 5th March 2017 at just 47 years of age. He would be celebrating his 50th birthday in October 2019.
I was one of 113 TeamMND runners, each running in support of people they knew who were or had been affected by MND. Between them, they raised an absolutely awe-inspiring £80,000.
Motor Neurone Disease is a rare, aggressive and a significantly life-limiting illness that currently has no known cure, although treatment does exist that can at least improve the quality of life of those who are suffering. Due to the nature of the condition, there is only 1 UK charity that supports MND.
Research is unwavering and is currently focusing on a single-stage test that will hopefully make the diagnosis of MND a far less long-winded and stressful process than it is today. By the time a lot of people get the diagnosis, the symptoms are often significantly progressed. TeamMND believe that “There is no finish line until there is a cure”.
