We are South Kent Mind, the local mental health charity for the Folkestone & Hythe and Dover district areas. Our mission is to improve the lives of people living with mental health challenges in South Kent, and to ensure that everyone has somewhere to turn for advice and support.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Here are some mental health statistics taken from MHFA.

  • 1 in 4 people experience mental health issues each year.
  • At any given time, 1 in 6 working-age adults have symptoms associated with mental ill health.
  • Mental illness is the second-largest source of burden of disease in England. Mental illnesses are more common, long-lasting and impactful than other health conditions.
  • 75% of mental illness (excluding dementia) starts before age 18
  • Men aged 40-49 have the highest suicide rates in the UK
  • 70-75% of people with diagnosable mental illness receive no treatment at all.

Each year, more and more people are experiencing some form of a mental health condition.

Since the pandemic, I have spoken to different people who have gone from never understanding or experiencing a mental health condition, to really struggling with it.

I have been championing mental health since the loss of my best friend Chris Quenby to suicide in 2016. Truth be told, I was contemplating doing the same at this time too and we both never opened up to each other about what we were feeling. Losing him and seeing the impact of his loss with family and friends, it started my own road to recovery. I believe his loss saved me so want to make sure I honour his name. During my recovery, I have experienced other losses from suicide and the ripple effect that happens after, including PTSD from finding someone who had decided to take the decision to end their life.

Each experience and conversation I have, with people who have either struggled or are trying to help someone through a struggle, continues my goal to raise money each year for the mental health community, under Fight Train Clothing, Chris former martial arts brand.

Everyone has mental health, some who are in a strong place mentally, others who need support from family/friends and others who need professional help. I believe when you're in a strong place of mental wellbeing, why not fundraise to help others financially who might need help.

A £5 donation could be the difference between someone still existing in person or them being a memory.

My next challenge will be running 3 marathons, two back to back weekend and one being a few weeks later, on behalf of Fight Train Clothing for South Kent Mind. www.southkentmind.org.uk

3rd April 2022 - Manchester Marathon

10th April 2022 - Brighton Marathon

8th May 2022 - Abbotts World Major Marathon (most likely on limited sleep as expecting twins around this period)

I have met Simon and the team at South Kent Mind to really understand their work and really want to see if I can help their community.

Any support would be much appreciated raising funds to help others in their time of need.

Much Love

Rob
