Dorset Wildlife Trust needs your help in fighting for wildlife against the rapidly growing pressures of development across Dorset.
We need to raise £30,000 to increase our capacity to deal with the serious threats to our environment posed by these plans, so that we can ensure future development caters for the needs of people and and protects our wildlife.
Over 60,000 new homes are proposed for Dorset during the next twenty years - that's over three thousand a year, with many major road schemes also planned. These could directly affect you and the community you live in. We are not against all development, only badly planned and unsustainable projects that pose a threat to our much-loved countryside. It is vitally important that we act to protect our natural heritage.
The 1,250 wildlife sites of county-wide importance with no legal protection are particularly at risk. We do a lot already to influence development that threatens these sites, but we must do more if key sites are to be protected. Local authorities do not have the necessary resources and we are often the only wildlife experts locally involved in this vital work. It takes time and money to check proposals, survey sites, advise planners and if necessary fight for wildlife at public inquiries. We must be ready for the battles ahead.
- Each year we submit written comments to local authorities on over 300 planning applications
- We check many more for any potential impact on wildlife
- We analyse and comment on the environmental impact of proposed developments
- We recommend actions to safeguard wildlife
- We monitor and protect the 1,250 Sites of Conservation Interest (wildlife sites of county-wide importance with no legal protection), and advise owners on how best to manage them for wildlife.
If we fail to protect wildlife and rebuild our biodiversity the consequences for Dorset could be disastrous.
Protecting wildlife against development may not seem as exciting as buying and managing nature reserves, but this work is crucial to ensure the safe future of our wildlife and your enjoyment of it. Please make a contribution today.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: The Dorset Trust for Nature Conservation Limited will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
