Story

The Mount Vernon Breast Cancer Research Unit is based in the Marie Curie Research Wing of the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.  It comprises of several Consultants, Clinical and Medical Oncologists, Breast Cancer Physician, Research Nurses, Data Managers, PA and Clinical Research Fellows.  It facilitates the conduct of research with a focus in breast cancer within the Cancer Centre. Research conducted within the unit is wide ranging and aims at improving our understanding of processes involved in breast cancer development and its treatment.  Much of the work is through the conduct of clinical trials for the improvement of breast cancer treatment.  Trials conducted in the unit include locally developed trials, national trials and also international trials.  Recruitment figures in our unit are consistently high.  These trials offer local patients the opportunity to have access to the latest treatments as well as resulting in better treatments for all women with breast cancer. Special research interests in the unit include:

   Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy

   Functional Imaging

   HER2 Directed Therapies

   Angiogenesis

   Prognostic Markers

The unit is led by Dr Andreas Makris and Dr David Miles who are recognised nationally and internationally as experts in the treatment of breast cancer. Research conducted within the unit is regularly presented at national and international meetings and several publications are produced every year in high impact peer review journals. The work of the unit is financially supported from several sources including National Cancer Research Network, Breast Cancer Research Trust, Breast Cancer Campaign and private donations.
