Story
To celebrate 30 years post diagnosis, TeamBones30 will take part on a series of challenges to raise awareness about osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
This is the first of a series of challenges, which will be undertaken by many members of this Team. Luis and Filipa will kick off with a half mile swim as part of the Henley Swim. This is an open water event, on the River Thames, by Temple Island Meadows.
Filipa: At 15, when I was diagnosed, I never thought that 30 years on I would be fundraising alongside my 10 year old son. The past 8 months have been tough as my prosthesis has been troublesome but with determination, self-believe and sheer hard work I am back in the water. No more crutches and, fingers crossed, the walking stick will be gone soon. These last few months have shown to many, my kids included, that cancer challenges you way beyond a cure. It leaves physical and emotional scars that stay with you locked in hidden rooms. With no warning they can come back. When they do, your friends and family, yet again, pull you through and show you that there is light at the end of the tunnel. It is time to celebrate and show 'it' that we can party on!
Luis: I am swimming this to help my Mummy raise money and to prove to people that if you have, or had, cancer you will be able to get through it. I am 10 years old. This is my first open water swimming event.
We are fundraising for Bone Cancer Research Trust as we want to raise awareness for this kind of bone cancer. Our fundraising efforts will fund valuable research and will continue to ensure that all affected by this disease are supported by the Charity.
