Story
On Sunday 30th May, I will be running the 2021 Edinburgh marathon in aid of Nurture the Borders. As a sonographer, I have seen how the periods of lockdown have impacted on pregnant women, Being separated from friends and family has often made their journey through pregnancy lonely and isolating at a time when they should be able to share their joy, fears and questions with others. The pandemic has added a level of stress and anxiety in what can already be an anxious time for many women. The Centre for Maternal Mental Health Alliance has found evidence of a significant increase in poor mental health for women during the periods of government imposed restrictions.
Nurture the Borders is a wonderful charity which provides much needed support, information, education and advocacy to women living in the Scottish Borders who are experiencing challenges within their pregnancy and as they become a mum.
The team of staff and volunteers have seen their referrals increase by 150% in the past year, demonstrating the effect the pandemic has had on women. They rapidly adapted their invaluable service to continue to support women through these challenging times. All women on their caseload were offered one to one support via video and telephone calls, invited to join weekly antenatal online chat groups, antenatal classes, relaxation classes, baby massage sessions and yoga.
Any spare pennies to help Nurture the Borders to continue their fantastic work would be much appreciated.
For obvious reasons the marathon will have to be run virtually! I’ll be running Gala - Selkirk - Melrose - Gala so give me a hoot or a wave if you see me plodding along!
Thank you
