Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page for Lifeblood's 'Stop the Clots' campaign.
This page is dedicated to the love of my life and soul mate of 24 years Ian Bonser (Bonzo) who died suddenly on Friday 8th October 2010.
Ian died of a pulmonary embolism caused by a deep vein thrombosis in his leg which had been undetected. He thought he had damaged his shoulder doing some heavy DIY. Ian was eventually taken into hospital with severe pain and breathing difficulties but no one had linked the shoulder pain with a DVT. Ian died very shortly after being admitted to hospital.
Too many people are dying of this awful condition as it is very hard to detect. The number of deaths in the UK each year that relate to thrombosis are greater than the combined deaths due to breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and road traffic accidents, yet little is really known about the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of blood clots.
"More than 33,000 people die each year because of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism," commented Dr Beverley Hunt, a leading NHS Consultant Haematologist and one of the founders of Lifeblood.
"There is so much brilliant research already being undertaken in the UK, but we need to do so much more to reduce disability and death due to thrombosis."
