Féileacáin (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland – SANDAI) is a not for profit organisation (CHY – 19635) that aims to offer support to anyone affected by the death of a baby during pregnancy or shortly after pregnancy. The organisation was formed by a group of bereaved parents who supported each other after the death of their own babies and have now come together to formally offer support to other parents and families who have lost a baby.

In 2013 my sister, brother in law and the rest of our family had to rely on the kind and generous support of Feileacain when my beautiful nephew Jasper was still born just weeks before his due date.  The support and kindness extended to us by Feileacain meant that we had a dedicated room in the hospital where we were looked after and counselled while Jasper was being delivered.  A memory box was given to us to help us take some treasured items and keepsakes.  In the following weeks the charity provided a much needed point of contact for the family.  Unfortunately still birth and miscarriage are more common than we would like to dwell on and Feileacain continues to deliver its wonderful services to countless families.

My promise to Jasper was to try and do more to help others and give something back each year in his memory to show that even the smallest of footprints could leave a big impression on the world.  This year I am running the Berghaus Dragon's Back race over 5 days from Monday 20th - Friday 25th of May.

The route is 315km long with 15000m of height gain across wild, trackless, remote and mountainous terrain.  It follows the mountain ranges from Conwy in North Wales to Llandeillo in the South of Wales.  Can I do it?  The honest answer is I dont know but I have trained as hard as I can and will give it my best shot.  Keeping Jasper in my thoughts will certainly spur me on.
