In May 2012 my friend Rhona and I will be on the "INCA TRAIL CHALLENGE" in deepest Peru. We will be walking at altitude, so it's not going to be a stroll in the park!
It was possibly one of the hardest things I have ever done. We arrived at camp in daylight on the first day but were still walking after dark on the second and third days.
I was so tired after the first day I just went straight to bed with just a drink. The second night I managed a meal but my two co walkers flaked out and on the third night I managed some soup before announcing I had to go to bed and was brought a pudding of purple corn jelly to give me some energy.
The altitude slowed us down with Rhona actually feeling sick but with some magic smelling salts and a bit of help from the porters carrying our day packs for the last hour or so we made it. They also had oxygen if required but we were OK. We were also amongst the oldest people on the trail with most of the others comprising gap year students or ones who had newly finished university.
We were burning at least 2500 calories a day and therefore we lost some weight.
The highest point was some 4215m and for me I felt that was our greatest achievement but reaching the "Sun Gate " at Machu Picchu was also a moment of euphoria in that we had all managed the trek.
